mamavathu sri saraswathi

4:20 PM Posted by Vijayasri

'maamavathu sree saraswathi' is a song composed by Mysore Vasudevacharya set on raaga Hindolam and talam Adi.

Hindolam raaga : Its equivalent in the Hindustani system is called Malkhauns. There are many ragas which are common to both systems of music. The names differ, but the notes are the same.
Hindolam has five notes Sa,Ga2,Ma1,Dha1,Ni2,Sa in arohanam and Sa,Ni2,Dha1,Ma1,Ga2,Sa in avarohanam.
This raga is derived from the 20th Melakarta viz., Nata bhairavi. Since it has five notes both in ascending and descending it is classified as Audava Audava raga. The power of raaga 'Hindolam' can be felt singing some of the famous Compositions like Samaja vara gamana by Tyagaraja, Neerajakshi Kamakshi by Muthuswamy Dikshitar, Mamavatu by Mysore Vasudevacharyar(which is dealt in this post) and Padmanabha pahi by Maharaja Swati Tirunal.

Mamavathu Saraswathi is a sweet krithi on Goddess Saraswathi set on Hindolam raaga.
